Super Eagles Sweep Aside Mozambique to Seal AFCON Quarter-Final Spot

Nigeria powered into the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations with a dominant 4–0 victory over Mozambique at the Fez Stadium, delivering one of their most assured displays of the tournament.

The Super Eagles wasted little time asserting control and took the lead in the 20th minute when Ademola Lookman applied a close-range finish after a clever set-up from Akor Adams. Their grip on the match tightened five minutes later as Victor Osimhen pounced on a loose ball in the area to make it two before half-time.

Nigeria picked up where they left off after the break, with Osimhen striking again just two minutes into the second half, guiding home Lookman’s cross to effectively end Mozambique’s hopes. The Mambas found it difficult to match Nigeria’s tempo and fluid movement as the contest wore on.

Akor Adams rounded off an impressive personal outing in the 75th minute, breaking clear on the counter-attack before rifling into the top corner from another Lookman assist to complete the comprehensive win.

The result marked Nigeria’s 16th straight progression beyond the group stage at AFCON and their 18th appearance in the knockout rounds overall, maintaining a remarkable record that stretches back to 1982. Eric Chelle’s team also advanced with a perfect group-stage run after earlier victories over Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda.

With the four-goal haul, the Super Eagles moved to 62 wins in AFCON history second only to Egypt and increased their tournament tally to 11 goals, making them the highest-scoring side so far. Nigeria have now found the net in 11 consecutive AFCON matches, their longest scoring streak in the competition.

The three-time champions will meet either Algeria or DR Congo in the last eight, with a potential semi-final showdown against hosts Morocco or Cameroon awaiting if their fine form continues.
