Polaris Bank Collaborates with NCF for Land Restoration, Tree Planting Initiative

Polaris Bank Limited, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts, has joined forces with the Nigeria Conservation Foundation (NCF) to launch a land restoration and tree planting initiative.

The project commenced on Monday with a tree planting event at Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

During the event, held in front of the university’s council chamber, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olumide Banjo, represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Adekunle Adeogun, expressed gratitude for the bank’s support.

Polaris Bank Executive Director, Chris Ofikulu, explained that the initiative celebrates World Environment Day in June 2024. The theme, “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,” aligns with the United Nations Decade of Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030).

Ofikulu stated, “Polaris Bank is dedicated to sustainable practices and land restoration by planting trees nationwide in areas affected by erosion, starting with Ogun State. Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in our responsible banking, empowerment of people and society, environmental initiatives, and sustainable economic growth guided by ESG principles.”

He highlighted the bank’s longstanding relationship with TASUED, dating back to its predecessor, SKYE BANK, in 2007, and emphasized the mutual benefits of this collaboration.

Ofikulu added, “This tree planting project not only reduces carbon footprints and enhances our ecosystem but also raises public awareness about environmental preservation. Planting 500 trees, with 250 at TASUED and 250 at another location in Ogun State, demonstrates our dedication to environmental stewardship and community well-being.”

TASUED Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oluwole Banjo, represented by Prof. Adeogun, acknowledged Polaris Bank’s significant contributions to the university’s development and urged further support for mutual benefits.

Ayodele Alamu, Senior Manager of Partnerships at NCF, stated that the initiative aims to achieve afforestation and restore Nigeria’s forest cover, addressing deforestation and its consequences such as land degradation and erosion.

Other notable attendees included Mrs. Bukola Oluyadi, Group Head of Customer Experience and Value Management, Rasheed Yusuf, Group Head of Ondo/Ekiti, Abiodun Daramola, Group Head of Ogun/Oyo, and Yemi Akinrelere, Head of Sustainability and Consumer Protection.
