ICPC Urges Youth Participation in Combatting Corruption

The Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) has called for the active engagement of young people in combating corruption in Nigeria. Yusuf Olatunji, the Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner in Osun State, made this appeal during an anti-corruption competition held in Osogbo, organized in collaboration with the Osun State Government for secondary school students.

Olatunji highlighted that the fight against corruption is not solely an individual effort, stressing that corruption poses significant threats to all areas of national life.

He stated, “The fight against corruption is not a one-man war; it requires collective responsibility, inter-agency cooperation, and, most importantly, the active involvement of our youth.”

The theme of the event, “Corruption: A Virus That We Must Eradicate,” was described by Olatunji as highly relevant and timely. He compared corruption to a deadly virus that affects every aspect of national life, undermining institutions, distorting values, depriving citizens of essential services, and hindering development.

He explained that, like a virus, corruption evolves, adapts, seeks new hosts, and spreads across generations if not addressed. Olatunji emphasized that it requires a strategic and coordinated approach that includes both prevention and enforcement.

He encouraged the younger generation to take initiative in the fight against corruption and urged parents and teachers to serve as positive role models.

Olatunji remarked, “You are not too young to make a difference. Your voices matter. Your creativity matters. Your ideals, when grounded in integrity, can challenge societal norms and inspire others to act rightly.”

He stressed that the battle against corruption starts in the mind and is rooted in personal choices, such as completing assignments honestly, avoiding examination malpractice, reporting injustices, and treating others fairly. He called for ongoing investment in character development and civic education, advocating for educational institutions to become centers of integrity and innovation.

In his comments at the event, Mr. Ibukun Fadipe, chairman of the Osun State Universal Basic Education Board, praised the competition’s organizers and announced that the state government plans to establish anti-corruption groups in secondary schools throughout the state.
