The Federal Government has tasked the management and staff of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on effective performance required to mitigate emerging leadership challenges facing the telecommunications sector.
Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, made this call on Thursday during a two-day retreat jointly organised by the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy and the NCC in Abuja.
The minister said the government was committed to improving the intellectual capacity of its employees.
Pantami stressed that critical, analytical, creative, collaborative, project management, social skills are vital to effective performance.
“The reason for this retreat is to continue to support the institutions, agencies we supervise for performance improvement,” he said.
“Most of the institutions are doing well, but as the saying goes: the result of hard work is more work. Secondly, we want to make sure that our today is better than yesterday and our tomorrow is better today.
“What we are here to do is improve on the performance of work done by agencies, parastatals under the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy (FMoCDE), that is while the theme is ‘effective management for 4th industrial Revolution,’ particularly in respect with delivering our mandate.
“4th Industrial Revolution came up with different challenges, that requires us to continue to update ourselves intellectually, as it is said we must Learn, Unlearn and Relearn.
“The Word Economy Forum (WEF), said that the skills required to be successful today, in the last five years aren’t in existence yesterday, but now they are most important.
“Soft skills such as critical thinking, analytical thinking, creativity, collaborative thinking, project management skill, social skills are all vital to achieving effective management performance,” he said.
In his own remarks earlier, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof Umar Danbatta said the retreat would help in repositioning the Commission for better performance.
Present at the retreat were the NCC Board Chairman, Prof Adeolu Akande, Executive Commissioner Stakeholder Management (ECSM), Barr Adeleke Adewolu, other Commissioners, senior management staff, and Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy officials.
